Sneak of the Week: Nike 6.0 WMNS Dunk High - Bold Berry

Another Dunk High finds it's way into the Sneak of the Week bunch today by way of the Nike 6.0 line. I must say, I think I'm in love. I know, I know, I say that alot, but this time I'm for really real! The stunning mix of bright pink "croc" embossed nubuck against textured silver side panels and toe box scream "premium" to me. I can't believe these are essentially, a 6.0 GR. But then again, I shouldn't be surprised. Nike 6.0 has put a number of astonishing Dunk Highs in the past few years and I see that the brand has no intention on stopping. Okdeen! This sweet pair will be available at NY shop ExtraButter. I gotta make a phone call...

Windy City Sole Summit Recap

Air Jordan XIV (14) Girls - Black/Desert Pink

An all-new Air Jordan 14 Retro for girls is slated to release this November. The colorway consists of a black base with rich, deep (desert) pink accents. Most interesting about this new pair is the contrast of materials - nubuck and glossy synthetic panels - which really seem to work well here. Is this a winner for the ladys? A first of it's kind, Girls Got Kicks is highly anticipated amongst members of our community and it is sure to be a staple for any sneaker enthusiast. Lori took some time out from her very busy schedule to chat with sneakHerbox.com about the new book, what keeps her inspired, and common misconceptions females in the sneaker culture are met with. sneakHerbox.com (shbx): Just in case some of our readers have been living under arock, give us a little bit of insight on your background as the creator ofFemale Sneaker Fiend:

Lori Lobenstine (Lori): Back in 2005 I was talking with Bobbito Garcia about hisbeautiful book, Where’d You Get Those?, I asked him why there weren’tany photos of female sneaker fiends. He said he’d looked for females in thesneaker game, but hadn’t really found them. So I thought to myself, ‘We gotta find a way to be recognized!’ Ithought a website could help us find each other (since many female sneakerfiends also don’t know any others), and help others in the industry notoverlook us.

It’s definitely succeeded on both those levels, and it’sbeen a great platform to promote female collectors, customizers and women inthe sneaker industry. And I’m honored that Bobbito had this to say about GirlsGot Kicks, "GIRLS GOT KICKS is aboutas definitive of a book on the subject as one can read, and people of allgenders can learn from it….Lori Lobenstine and crew nailed it, and filled thevoid for what all efforts prior, including mine, failed to uncover."

sneakHerbox.com (shbx): The female sneaker movement has had a digital presence formost of the decade, we haven't really seen anything in print like we will beseeing with Girls Got Kicks. What was your inspiration behind this project?

Lori Lobenstine (Lori): I always had it in my mind to do a book. To me it’s anotherway to carve a lasting spot for females in the culture. It just took a lotlonger than I thought to track down close to 200 of the most insane femalesneaker fiends around the world…and I still missed you! (That sucks!) But I amproud that Girls Got Kicks rewrites sneakerhistory to honor the girls and women who have always been a part of it.

shbx: The book is described as a "photo documentary of badassfemales, told from a unique angle, their passion for sneakers" - inaddition to seeing some dope photography, you've done a great deal of writingto tie the pieces together. Can you tell us what the reader can expect to takeaway from reading the book?

Lori: I combed through interviews from over 5 years on the site,and really enjoyed picking quotes that summed up so much about our passion andour community. There are pieces on our first loves, what we do when bad thingshappen to good kicks, what it’s like being a “mama fiend”, and the surprisingsimilarities between tomboy and girly-girl fiends. Then there are individualinterviews with artists, athletes, designers, customizers and more. There’s alot in those 188 pages!

shbx: What kind of impact do you hope this book will have on theculture?

Lori: I want it to stand by other great sneaker books like SneakerFreaker and Where’d You Get Those? But more than that, I wantfemales to feel like it’s OUR book. It’s not my book, it’s not Amanda’s book,it’s all of ours. I think it also blows away the sexist notion that girlsshould outgrow their sneakers.

shbx: In your travels across the globe, what have been some of thesimilarities (and differences) between international female sneaker heads andFSF'ers stateside?

Lori: A lot more similarities than differences. Girls everywherestruggling with sizing, and we’re all reading the same sites, so there’s agrowing homogeneity about our kicks. That said, there are definitely regionaldifferences. I’d say the Europeans are way more into Air Maxes (and way lessinto Jordans). They’re also more likely to rock a cute dress with their kicks.

shbx: During the process of creating this book, what has been someof your fondest memories/ experiences?

Lori: Traveling has been great. I loved getting to be a part ofB-Girl Be in Minneapolis, Street Science in Rotterdam, Dunkxchange in Miami,and so much more. I’ve loved working with Amanda, who’s such a tremendousphotographer. The FSF BBQ was a kick in the pants, too. Man, a lot of memories!

shbx: How do you manage to stay enthused and passionate about thesneaker culture after all these years?

Lori: It’s easy for me. I love sneakers, and that hasn’t stopped,and I’m really curious about people who are passionate, so I love the fiends asmuch as the kicks. Even when a girl has a totally different taste in kicks thanI do, I love to hear her talk about her kicks, her crazy cleaning habits, thelengths she went to to cop a pair, all the madness we do all the time!

shbx: Any sneaker pet peeves (like stepping on gum, lol)?

Lori: I hate it guys assume girls only have nice sneakers if ourboyfriends got them for us. Half the time we’re the ones buying kicks for ourboyfriends! (Or girlfriends for that matter….)

shbx: The Girls Got Kicks! Book Tour will be rolling into a majorcities in the coming weeks, with its first stop in NYC on September 15th. Fans will be able to pick up their copy andalso meet with you. For those of us whomay not be in any of those locations, where else will the book be available?

Nike Air Mag 2011 - Re-Designed by a Female?

Over the past week, sneakerheads around the world are buzzing about the recently released Nike Air Mag of Back to the Future fame. Since its "return", ladies and gents have been feeling nostalgic and soaking up all the info there is about the 2011 auction-style release. But did you know the latest incarnation was re-vamped by a female? Tiffany Beers, a Nike footwear designer (and dream-job holder!), was tasked by Tinker Hatfield himself to help recreate the Nike Air Mag, and bring the BTTF staple to the present with a futuristic feel. She's done a fine job and we commend her on being a innovator in the sneaker world! Great work, Tiffany!

As the year continues on, brands are starting to drop info surrounding their Holiday 2011 releases, including a few nail polish companies. Zoya brand is gearing up for winter blitz with a new collection which includes jewel toned polishes and bar glitter topcoats. You can expect to see this collection to roll into beauty stores on September 15, 2011. I think the colors look great, but I'm a bit apprehensive about bar glitter because in my past experiences with it, it is a doozey to remove (as with all glitter polishes). Right now you're either not sure if serious, but yes, this is a post, about Pastry Shoes. Don't be shocked, there's nothing wrong with diversity in the realm of sneakers ~~although I know that if it's not a Jordan or Nike release, a lot of you will not even consider it~~. Nevertheless, here at sneakHerbox we plan on bringing you more of what you wouldn't normally see on other sneaker sites. And since there really wasn't a Nike Back to School Pack, it's only right that we show some love to a brand that actually did stick with that theme. The Sire Hi Varsity sports a blend of wool and leather in four different color combos - grey, burgundy, purple and black - to give you the feel of an actual varsity jacket. A chenille letter "P" is attached in keychain style on the laceloops of each pair. I think they did a swell job of capturing that back to school vibe. Would you rock?

Okay, I have a sneakHer confession, I'm a sucker for high-tops. No matter the brand and typically, no matter the color, if it's a high-top, I'd probably rock it. Although the adidas brand is usually considered when speaking of low top shell toes, they do a pretty good job of bringing some Hi heat to the table. Case in point, the above pictured women's Ecstasy Mid in a deep pink. Super shiny patent leather is paired with smooth suede to add a lux feel to this pair, while the super sleek design makes these appealing to female sneaker fiends as well as chicks who only rock kicks once in a spell. In the sneaker world, certain colorways and materials can reach an almost iconic status. Take for instance, "infrared" - which has graced a number of our favorite models; and the use of patent leather, for which without it, Air Jordan 11s just wouldn't be the same. After more than enough initial images and detailed shots of the year's big Holiday release in men's sizes, we finally get a look at the Air Jordan 11 "Concord" in grade school sizes. For the most part, this small footed pair stays true to its larger sized counterpart, with signature black patent paneling and white mesh upper. The "Concord" color comes into play on the Jumpman logo on the tongue tag and on the outsole, which comes in a light blue tint, similar to last year's Cool Greys. They look amazing! Vibe Vixen x Atlanta Got Sole Present: Chicks Who Love Kicks

As of late, sneaker ladies have been receiving a lot of attention from our male counterparts. A notable consideration came in the form of Playboy's recent jump into the trendy business of faux sneaker "info" by releasing a photoset in which Playmates laced up (and in most cases, the shoes were all they were wearing o.O) in what the publication deemed their Top 23 Jordan models of all time. Since then, other blog and news sites have joined the Chicks and Kicks bandwagon, including Atlanta based e-media source, Atlanta Got Sole.

ASG recently teamed up with female-centric online magazine, Vibe Vixen, to create a photo spread featuring model, Ily McMillan, rocking a few anticipated sneaker releases for Fall 2011. The photos primarily show McMillan leisurely "chilling" while wearing a Jordan Brand or Nike sneaker (as seen above), while others are set outdoors with Ily in a bikini and kicks (you can view more photos of the set here). I'd assume that the general purpose of this project was to highlight upcoming sneaker releases in a manner that would attract male readers. Job well done, I would assume.

So, now that you've gotten the gist of what this particular sneaker project is all about, I have a couple discussion questions:

Is the concept of a scantly clad female in sneakers overdone ~~yet~~?
Is there anything wrong with this particular portrayal of a female sneaker head (note, I didn't say enthusiast)?
Would you (or have you) participate in a photoshoot of this sort?
Do photoshoots of this nature create any difficulties in maintaining respect in this culture? Does it even matter?

Yeah, I finally got it together and posted a sneaker mani on Friday, whoot! Gold Star for myself, lol

Today's manicure was inspired by one of the most shedangly sneakers I own. The Reebok Freestyle Hi "Disco" released in 2008 as part of Reebok's ongoing 25th anniversary celebration. I picked this pair up in store at St. Alfred here in Chicago and wore them about a day or so after purchase. I was THAT excited. The gold painted leather glistens in the light and really catches the eye. Dashes of light green and pink add a flirty element that I really like, as well as the purple and pink polka dot sock liner. You probably already know that the Air Jordan V (5) Retro - Black/Varsity Red or "Metallics" as they are often referred to as, is set to drop in just a couple of weeks. What you probably haven't seen, however, are detailed images of the grade school sized retros. You are in luck today! The last time we saw this pair on shelves was in 2007, and staying true to (retro) form, they share the same black nubuck upper, speckled "peaks" and 3M tongue. A slight blue tint can be seen on the outsole and we get varsity red instead of fire red but, generally those additions are not dealbreakers. Let me start off by saying that, I have not bought one pair of SBs this year. Sure, that could definitely be filed under "no1curr" but, I preface this post with that pertinent information because I think this pair could put an end to my "SB no-buy" situation. The Plum High scheduled to drop this Fall gets its look from the Nike SB Dunk Low Plum released in 2001. Of course, finding a pair of the original is rare if not impossible, but the revamp coming in September will serve as a nice consolation prize. And since the Nike SB line usually shows the small footers love with models going all the way down to a size 4, chances of ol Beedee copping a pair are very high. It seems as though the Swoosh has applied that theory to a number of a their sub-lines, re-hashing popular themes and colorways on a variety of different models. This time around, we see a Nike SB Dunk Mid in an "Un-Tiffany" scheme, with the traditional Tiffany blue (or green) taking prominence on the upper. No croc textured print here, just pebbled black leather and smooth suede. Sure, this is a very stripped down version of the original, but we give it an A for effort. Freaky Nail Sunday! The Colors of Summer

Today's sneaker-colorway nail art is inspired by summer! I received the above-pictured Nike Dunks as a gift for Christmas and couldn't wait til the Summer came around to rock them. I knew exactly what I wanted to do in terms of nail art, although I didn't have as much time as I would have liked (hence some of the messiness on the pinky and middle fingers). I took a look at my nail polish stash and pulled out two Wet N Wild Wet Shine polishes and a Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear lacquer for my base colors. My dotting tool and Kiss Nail Art brush were in hand to create the curved lines and dots that I love so much, lol Check out a few more pictures of this look after the jump and let me know what you think!

The latest Nike Air Max 90 GS offering could be considered a close cousin to one of my favorite sneakers of all time - the Infrared Air Max 90 - but there are some noticeable differences. To start, Sport Red and Medium Grey replace the iconic Infrared and Neutral Grey, but the same color placement is in toe. Another standout is the use of ballistic nylon mesh on the black side paneling and swoosh. A colorful multi squared Nike tongue tag finishes off the look. FUEGO. More pics after the jump! As a child, I loved wearing jelly sandals. They were the archetype of summer shoes and their colorful translucent nature made me think of sunshine, popsicles, and all around groodness. Reebok has been making a serious effort to "comeback" as of late, for some it seems to be in vain, while for others, it is a triumphant return to the forefront (sort of). With the recent enlisting of one man band man, Swizz Beatz, as creative director for the brand, Reebok has seen a jolt of interest come in the form of the re-worked Kamikaze III model. Today we have a peek at a new colorway just for the laydays. Black predominantly covers the upper while pink accents the midsole. A simple, yet effective look. We see you Reebok! Freaky Nail Friday - Tuesday Edition!

With all the activities the last week of June brings to the city of Chicago, in addition to the Holiday, it was quite hard to distinguish yesterday from oh, let's say Friday. Anywho, today I have a ~~later than promised~~ post on another sneaker-colorway inspired nail art manicure. As you can see, the inspiration behind this look was taken from the coveted Nike Air Max Lebron 8 V1 "South Beach" colorway. If you follow the blog and our twitter, you probably know how much I really really REALLY wanted these, and how I totally went ham when the news dropped that they'd be available in GS sizes. Truly an amazing color scheme to commemorate Lebron's trip from the midwest to Miami. Since then, the price and availability of this sneaker in both mens and kids sizes has become infamous. The color itself being solidified in sneaker cdub history, right up there with "bred" and "neon", with tons of custom jobs and official releases following suit. For my nail look, I took a rather simple approach, with the base color being a clear match for the "Retro" green of the 8s, a little mint green to match the outsole, and of course, black and pink dashes and dots to give the look a "retro, 80s" feel. However, without a wicked awesome camera, the color looks a bit more blue than it truly is. Nonetheless, still a groovy look! Check out more pictures after the jump.

The Return: Full Max Air Units return to Women’s Nike Air Max 95

It is my pleasure to report that the Sneaker Goddesses have heard our prayers to stay (or return) true to form and bring back the Full Air Units on the Nike Women’s Air Max 95. We began getting shafted a few years ago, with only one large air unit being featured in the heel on a number of AM95 drops, including the OG Grape colorway of last year. Needless to say, Air Max heads were not pleased with the lack of full air support and apparently, the Swoosh got wind. The above pictured 95, a tonal grey and light blue color-up, will be the first new pair rocking the old formula. How awesome is that? The Nike Air Feather Hi has gained a considerable amount of steam since it’s introduction in 2010. For Summer 2011, we’ll see two additional colorways added to the mix for the laydays. Wolf Grey and High Voltage (Yellow) are seen on one pair, while the other sports a neutral grey and club purple look. A mix of nylon and suede add a premium feel to both pairs. Nice! The Air Jordan V (5) retros just keep rolling out this year, and although I am still peeved at the un-confirmed release of the coveted Laney/Grape AJ5 pack (ie ~~WHY IS IT NOT RELEASING?~~!), the above pictured GS Retro 5 serves as a nice consolation prize. Smooth white leather serves as a platform for a Legacy and Scarlet Red midsole with speckled peaks. The traditional 3M tongue is in toe, along with the translucent outsole we love to see. A super clean look that the ladies and tiny tots will enjoy. Included in this “pack” will be the Nike W Skinny Dunk High, Nike W Air Max 90 and Nike W Air Feather High in an array of vivid colorways. Freaky Nail Friday - Monday Edition, lol

I know, I know, I have my days totally off. I have a good ~~excuse~~ reason though! Welp, actually I don't but I really wanted you guys to check out this sneaker colorway-inspired Mani (some of my twitter followers may have already seen this look, but if you haven't, keep on reading). I recently ended a 1 month "no-buy" on polish (I mandated a cease on purchasing polish because I really went overboard over the past month), so I bought some new colors. One of those being a sandy-grey color from the O.P.I. Pirates of the Caribbean collection. I knew I wanted to do something with polka dots but I had no idea it would really match the Infrared Air Max 90s until I picked the accent color out. It's a really pretty poppy color that is very reminiscent of the pinkish-orange infrared us sneaker people have come to know and love.

No tutorial today, because I was in a bit of a rush when I did this manicure. I don't think it really needs one though, it was another very simple look to create and I really only needed was something to create dots (a dotter, bobby pin, old writing pen, etc.) and something to create lines (nail art pen, brush, etc.). Once you have your colors and tools, you're good to go! Anyhoo, check out more pictures of this Air Max 90 "Infrared" inspired manicure. Hope you like!

Explain to me, back in the day, what kid didnʼt like Loony Tunes? I could sit in

front of the TV for hours watching Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and especially Tazmanian

Devil. That show was my quiet drug. Now my hyper pill was watching the Bulls games

with my dad. I still remember clearly every TV in the house being turned all the way up

just as the announcer said: “AND NOW FOR YOUR CHICAGO BULLS” and me bouncing

around the room like a kid right before a sugar crash. Mix the two together and a never

ending high ran through my veins.

The Space Jam movie was all I could talk about for weeks. I think I lost count

how many times I saw that movie before it left theaters and I also believe my mom got so

tired of seeing it she did something to my video. Finally, a collaboration between

basketball and Warner Broʼs, OMG! The shoe was just icing on my cake. I already am

in love with the Jordan XI model, and blue is my favorite color. Yep, my heart melted

when I ﬁrst saw these. Too bad I couldnʼt get me a pair back then, but I surely did cop in

2009.

Honestly I think the Finishline people wanted to blow my brains out. From the

moment I knew these shoes where rereleasing, I bothered those people. I donʼt do

campoutʼs so I had to be sure my pair was on lock. I had everything planned, my shoe

was on hold, and the mall opened at like 7. Being a mall employee I was in there before the

crowd, put in an early entry form and because my connect at the time was the store

manager, I was in the store before the lights where even turned on. All my XI wishes

came true; eventually.

What is not to like about the tuxedo shoe, sporty with a touch of formality. The

Jordan XI was the ﬁrst pair to feature patent leather and you gotta love simplicity of the

shoe. For me, aside from the aforementioned, I tend to be a sucker for all black, and I

love the small dash of color. Plus in itʼs own way, this shoe brought back a small piece of

my childhood. It may not be my favorite shoe, but it deﬁnitely holds a special place in my

heart.

Asics x Sneakersnstuff GT -II - Releases Tomorrow, Saturday, June 18th

You've probably been hearing news about Asics x Ronnie Fieg projects all year, but make no mistake, the Asics x SNS collaboration is one to check for. The inspiration behind this particular colorway comes from the runestones (which are inscribed stones created to mark territory and/or pay homage to deceased loved ones) SNS founders Peter and Erick saw growing up in Sweden. Those runestone inscriptions are represented on the GT-II, which happens to be one of their favorite models, in the form of letters written on the signature cross lines on the sidepanels as well as on the insole. Perfect execution! Not only is this collaboration a must for Asics lovers but luckily, the size run goes from a boys 4 to a mens 13 - OH JOY! The countdown to the release has already started on the sneakersnstuff website, so be sure to stay glued to your mouse tomorrow afternoon!
